The Universe Is Sending You a Spiritual Message

I have a friend who talks about messages from the Universe. When I think that God is trying to tell me something, he corrects me and says the Universe is speaking to me, and I should listen. I’m a Christian, and I naturally think about God.

You might have a friend like this, and maybe you believe in the spiritual power of the Universe. It’s a popular concept, and I have met many people who like the idea.

The idea that the Universe sends messages to us, and we can find our way through life if we listen, is popular these days. Oprah is one celebrity, among many, who thinks we need to hear from the Universe; life teaches us how to be successful if we listen. These messages include personal responsibility; they are things we need to do if we want to find our destiny.

With my friend who talks about the Universe, that word is another way to say ‘God’ without getting religious and joining a church. Lately, he has started to read the Bible, to see if that part of the Universe can teach him something. I think he is stuck in Genesis, but I hope he makes it through.

There is a danger that we could become stuck on an empty concept with a bland name, and that space could be filled by anything. If we follow something we call ‘The Universe’ we could drift into Self Help, or New Age reverence of spirits, and into some controlling cult practices. An empty space must be filled. Also, note that our universe is dying, according to scientists. Sometime in the distant future, it is doomed to dissipate its and become “cold dark, and desolate.”

Something that is dying itself, cannot give us life. Our greatest self-help success must end when we end.

So, what should we do with this idea about the spiritual importance of the Universe?

Believe it.

The Bible told us about listening to the Universe, thousands of years ago. The first Christians had clear and detailed teaching about God, from Jewish tradition, including the Bible. Their problem was the neighbors. Those Christians were surrounded by pagans who wanted to follow Jesus, but without a foundation of Jewish teaching. Remember, Jesus was called ‘Rabbi’ and He lived in northern Israel.

The question was ‘How can these know-nothings believe?’

And the answer was, they have spiritual messages from the Universe:

Since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. (Romans 1: 19 and 20)

We’ve been singing about this for years in our churches. One of the most popular hymns, in many languages, and many countries says it clearly:

Apparently, Christians in Russia love this song:

So yes, the Universe is sending us a message. It is pointing us to God who made us and all the other parts of the Universe around us. All those temporary, dying things point us to the Eternal One, and that is where we need to make our home.

If you are open to spiritual messages from the Universe, I hope you hear that one.

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet; all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! (Psalm 8: 3 to 9)
