A recent survey by Barna discovered that a faith reawakening is taking place among Millennials and Gen Z who are now leading the way in Church attendance, Faithwire reports.
“For the first time in decades, younger adults—Gen Z and Millennials—are now the most regular churchgoers, outpacing older generations, who once formed the backbone of church attendance,” Barna stated in its new release.
Millennials include those born between 1981 and 1996 (ages 29 to 44). Gen Z includes those born between 1997 and 2012 (13 to 28).
This speaks of a major transformation taking place in church culture. Over the years, it has typically been the older generations who have filled the pews in most churches.
The survey found that on average a Gen Z attends church 1.9 times a month and a Millennial 1.8 times. This beats Gen X and Boomers/Elder who attend church 1.6 times and 1.4 times a month respectively.
Barna added that Millennials and Gen Z’s church attendance has “nearly doubled over the past five years.” Earlier surveys found that these two groups attended church roughly once a month.
Barna’s vice president of research, Daniel Copeland, stated, “This data represents good news for church leaders and adds to the picture that spiritual renewal is shaping Gen Z and Millennials today.”
