According to an article in the New York Times (NYT), a new and dangerous illness has arrived on the east coast of the US.  Called Candida Aurus, it is a fungus that has been showing up in other countries such as Venezuela and Spain, but has now hit America with deadly consequences.

The US Center for Disease Control (CDC) reported that there are 587 people with the infection including 309 in New York, 144 in Illinois and 104 in New Jersey.

The disease is a bacteria and is considered both dangerous and mysterious.

It is dangerous because there is no known cure. Antifungal medication typically used to combat this type of disease are ineffective. It is one of those superbugs that are resistant to modern drugs.

Its symptoms that include fever and fatigue are particularly dangerous for  those with compromised immune systems. This can include newborns, the elderly, smokers and those with other health complications.

One elderly patient who showed up at a Mount Sinai hospital in Brooklyn, New York died within 90 days. And despite the person being put in isolation, they discovered the bacteria had spread throughout the person’s room and it even required the removal of some ceiling panels and floor tiles.

It gained its mysterious designation because the infection is difficult to diagnose and as well, the NYT alleges these new diseases are “cloaked in secrecy” because governments, agencies and hospitals are not revealing where the outbreaks are taking place.

Caught off guard by its arrival, the bacteria has spread through many centers before medical staff knew what was happening,  The NYT added that some nursing homes in Chicago are reporting that up to 50% of their patients have the bacteria.

Because of its resistance to modern medication, the US Center for Disease Control added the bacteria to its growing list of diseases classified as “urgent threats.”

Medical researchers are blaming the overuse and improper use of antibiotics for the arrival of these superbugs which has resulted in these bacteria changing or evolving.

However, researchers with California Polytechnic State University (CPSU) challenged that notion when they discovered drug-resistant bacteria in the guts of Aztec mummies hundreds of years old.

These bacteria were resistant to such modern medicines like penicillin and tetracycline before they were developed.

Speaking on behalf of CPSU, Raul Cano added:

“It’s ridiculous to think that evolution of anti-biotic resistance began when penicillin was discovered.”

Basically, all of us have a different genetic make up, some have blue eyes and others brown. The same thing occurs in the bacteria, as we developed medication that killed off bacteria, it allowed those with a natural, drug-resistance to grow and spread.

Jesus predicted that one of the markers that we were entering the end-times would be the rise of plagues:

10 Then He said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. (Luke 21:10-11 New King James)

The word “pestilences” in this verse is the Greek word “loimos” which literally referred to plagues or diseases that run rampant. Initially it was thought the plagues would be unthinkable in our time of modern medicine.

It is difficult to know at this point if Candida Aurus is one of those plagues that Jesus was warning about. But medical researchers are stating that new medications are desperately needed to combat the rise of  ‘superbugs.’
