[by Dean Smith] I am sure the Christian parents of mega-pop star Katy Perry have struggled as they watched their daughter climb the heights of stardom while seemingly walking away from her faith.
Katy’s parents, Keith and Mary Hudson, are Pentecostal pastors now based in Santa Barbara, CA. They minister through the US preaching the Gospel. Katy grew up in a Christian home, attended a Christian school and for a time even sang Gospel music.
But as her popularity grew, she walked away from her faith. In a 2013 interview with a woman’s magazine, Marie Claire, Katy stated she no longer “believes in an old man sitting on a throne” and certainly her lifestyle would back up that statement.
But things are never as cut and dried as they seem and this applies to all children of Christian parents.
In an interview with E! host Ryan Seacrest, during the 2015 Grammy Awards, Katy said before her half time performance at this year’s Super Bowl, she believed God spoke to her. She was nervous about the performance because of over-preparation and actually prayed about her worries.
“It’s funny, I was praying and I got a word from God and He says, ‘You got this and I got you.’ And then I was on top of the lion and a guy, just looked at me with the headset that I’ve never communicated with before and he just looked me straight in the eyes and said, ‘you got this.’ And it was like, ‘Oh this is God confirming I can do this.'”
On the day of the Super Bowl, Katie tweeted from Psalm 118:24:
“Today is the day that the Lord has made and I will rejoice and be glad in it.”
I never saw Katy’s half-time performance and I have heard both good and bad about it.
But the point I want to make is this. God hasn’t given up on our children and He is still speaking to them no matter how they are living or what they are saying, even to you.
There are times when God interjects Himself into their life and they know it is God. This does not mean Katy will return to the faith of her youth tomorrow, but it does mean God has not forsaken her and this should encourage all Christian parents to continue praying for their children.
Proverbs 22: 6 reads:
6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. (King James)
This verse tells us if we train our children in God’s ways, when they are old, they will not depart from it. In between, they may go through times of spiritual apathy or even full rebellion, but God has planted a seed of faith in their hearts. And though there are no signs of spiritual life, that seed is still there biding its time.
God promises when they are old, meaning it could be years down the road, that seed of faith will begin to re-assert itself in your child’s life.
Until then, we need to pray and believe God.
